Kazakh Eagle Hunters Experience, Mongolia

The Kazakh eagle hunters of Western Mongolia are a culture threatened by modernisation and climate change, but their ancient traditions are still alive and well. We had the privilege of spending a week with Eagle Hunters in the remote Altai Mountains and learning about their culture and way of life.

Every day we woke up early in the morning and rode horses out to the mountains. The hunters would show us how they live with eagles and hunt alongside them in the vast snowy plains.

It was an amazing experience to spend time with the hunters and families in their village. We learned a lot about Kazakh culture and the tradition of eagle hunting and made life-long friendships.

Here are some other things you can learn about Kazakh eagle hunters and their culture:

  • Eagle hunting is a millennia-old tradition that is passed down from generation to generation.
  • The Kazakh eagle hunters are skilled horsemen and trackers. They use golden eagles to hunt for prey, such as rabbits, foxes, and wolves.
  • Eagle hunting is not only a way to provide food, but it is also a way to connect with nature and the spirit world.
